At its facility in Hatfield, Pennsylvania, Parker Hannifin’s Precision Fluidics Division manufactures gas delivery products for the dental and medical nitrous oxide and oxygen market. Around 16,000 hose assemblies are crimped each year, with annual growth expected to be approximately three percent.
From Manual Crimping to Consistent Results
Before investing in Finn-Power, Parker Hannifin used manual arbor presses to crimp nickel-plated brass ferrules onto gas supply hoses used with its flowmeters and accessories. The main challenges were operator ergonomics and achieving the desired leak rates for the hose assemblies.
Today, two Finn-Power CC22 crimping machines handle this process. As part of the implementation, the machines were adapted with additional safety guarding to meet Parker Hannifin’s safety requirements. The change has significantly reduced fatigue in operators’ hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders while providing more consistent crimping results.
Meeting the Required Leak Rates Per ISO 5359
“We have much greater consistency in the crimps and reliable leak rates for the hose assemblies. We are now able to meet the leak rates per ISO 5359 for low-pressure hoses, whereas our previous manual crimping methods were not able to achieve the desired leak rates described in this standard,” says Seth Wolf, Engineering and Facilities Manager at Parker Hannifin Corporation.
One of the most valuable aspects of the CC22 machines has been the ability to achieve consistent crimps based on the selected crimp diameter.
“Our production numbers are likely very low compared to the average hydraulic crimping machine user, but our machines have been very dependable and provide highly consistent results that mean everything to us.”
